Connecting the Coordinates

Local entrepreneur and CEO of Field of View, David Dvorak, joined us for our June DroneBiz luncheon to fill us in on imaging and mapping solutions for unmanned aircraft. In case you missed, we’ve got the recap!

David-small-1David has been in the UAS business for 10 years, which is a lifetime in this industry. His focus, though, is not the airframe. Rather, he is all about the camera. Field of View is a company with an engineering background that has packaged a light weight camera with their GeoSnap system that triggers the camera and geographically marks where each photo is taken. This data is then used in software to help streamline and automate the stitching/mapping process.

Field of View 1David pointed out that each site scan provides a mosaic of many photos, with each photo containing thousands of data points. Specialized stitching software quickly identifies commonalities among these data points and makes ‘tie points’ which are used to stitch the photos together quickly. This technique produces 3D maps of the area scanned with nearly photo realistic quality!

With this technology, the applications are endless. For example, imagine a materials business that stockpiles dirt, rock, or similar materials. With just one flight, this technology can quickly and accurately read the volume of material in the pile.

David sees growing opportunity now that FAA regulations (Part 107) have opened up commercial application of UAS technology. In 2015, there were 700 registered drone operators, but with Part 107 that number grew to 5500 in 2016. Who knows how many drone pilots the future will bring us.
